Lay Health Worker Certification Program

Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and University of Maryland School of Public Health are hosting a Lay Health Worker Certification Program on Hepatitis B in the Asian community this Saturday, June 29, 2013 from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Resource Table at St. Andrew Kim Church and Local Screening Event

On Sunday, June 16, AAHI provided health education to community members at the St. Andrew Kim Catholic Church in Olney. At our resource table, AAHI shared information on important health topics such as cancer, hepatitis B, osteoporosis, diabetes, tobacco use, and heart health. Church members who approached our table expressed their appreciation for our work in providing health education and information on local resources in Korean.

In other news, AAHI is excited to share that Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, along with Shady Grove Radiology in Germantown, will be hosting another screening event for Asian Pacific Islanders who may be at high-risk for lung cancer. Lung Cancer Screening and Education for Asian Pacific Islander Community
Date: Sunday, June 23, 2013
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Location: Shady Grove Radiology Outpatient Imaging Center, 19731 Germantown Road, Suite 102, Germantown, MD.
Cost: $60 (Insurance cover not available)

In many cases, early detection of lung cancer can lead to effective treatments. Please join Shady Grove Adventist for their low-dose CT lung cancer screening event for Asian Pacific Islander community members.
Eligible candidates include:
  • Men and women ages 55-74.
  • Smoking history (one pack/day for 30 years, two packs/day for 15 years or three packs/day for 10 years).
  • Significant exposure to second-hand smoke and/or previous asbestos exposure.

Recap of Past Events

AAHI has been busy this past week with educating community members on wellness and information on local resources. Please read on for a recap of the events!

Resource Table at Hopeside Community Church
On Saturday, June 8, AAHI provided health education to community members at the Hopeside Community Church in Silver Spring. AAHI’s resource table included educational materials on a variety of health topics such as breast cancer, hepatitis B, osteoporosis, diabetes, heart health, and patient-physician communication. AAHI offered carbon monoxide screenings to church members who visited our table. 


Prekindergarten/Head Start Family Health and Fun Day
On Saturday, June 8, AAHI also participated in the Montgomery County Public School’s Prekindergarten/Head Start Program’s Family Health & Fun Day. The event featured an exhibit area where AAHI shared health information and local services with County residents and their families.


World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
On Wednesday, June 12, Montgomery County held its 3rd Annual “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day” in Silver Spring. This year’s focus was on raising awareness through education. The event featured various seminars as well as exhibitions from organizations that assist the senior population in the County. AAHI provided health education and information on local services to attendees.

Enroll in RecAssist Fund Program

RecAssist applications will be available online and at the Recreation's Administration Office beginning June 3, 2013. The RecAssist Fund is provided by Montgomery County Recreation to make financial assistance available to County residents who receive public assistance. The RecAssist Fund subsidizes Recreation program fees so that eligible residents can pay reduced fees for Recreation programs. 

Assistance is offered to residents who currently receive one of the following public assistance: Temporary Cass Assistance, Food Stamps, Medical Assistance, Care For Kids, or Supplemental Security Income. Use of the RecAssist Fund is available on a “first come, first served” basis and the amount of RecAssist placed on your Recreation account is based on the number of family members your documentation shows who are currently receiving assistance. Applications will be processed and the awarded funds can be used beginning on July 1, 2013 for Recreation programs. 

To apply, a completed application and copies of documentation may be submitted by mail, by fax at (240) 777-6818, or walked-in to our Administration Office, located at 4010 Randolph Road, Silver Spring. Office hours are Monday - Friday from 8:30am - 4:30pm. The RecAssist application form is available online at http://www6.montgomerycountymd.gov/content/rec/how/financialassistance.pdf.

Montgomery County to Kick Off “Be Active Montgomery!” Campaign
Date: Saturday, June 8, 2013
Time: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Location: South Germantown Recreation Park, 18041 Central Park Circle, Boyds, MD
Cost: FREE
The County's new "Be Active Montgomery!" outreach campaign promotes health and wellness through recreation and leisure activities. The free kick-off event will include a 3/4 mile "senior walk" on the Heart Smart trail at 10:00am, an 11am-"family walk," and a 1pm "family bike and trike." Also included will be healthy food vendors and interactive demonstrations such as Quick Start tennis, Zumba and golf clinics. Attendees who complete a fitness challenge will recieve free admission to the miniature golf course at the South Germantown Recreation Park and the Germantown Outdoor Pool located at 18905 Kingsview Drive. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

10th Annual Men's Health Symposium: What Men Should Know about their Prostate

Family Fun & Fitness Day

Help you and your family gear up for a safe and healthy summer with tips from Holy Cross Hospital and the Germantown Library. This event is designed for expectant families, parents and children of all ages. Learn how to improve your overall health and wellness through free health screenings, participate in interactive fitness class demonstrations, and hear lectures on child safety and food safety in warm temperatures. Information on community health resources and library services and arts and crafts for children will also be provided. Health SCREENINGS are FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED on the day of the event! 

Activities to look forward to include:

  • Interactive fitness demonstrations, plus fitness resources from the library
  • Tips on healthy eating and food safety for summer
