AAHI in the News: Staying Healthy Through Preventative Care

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chronic diseases, such as heart disease or cancer, are responsible for 7 of every 10 deaths among Americans each year. Fortunately, there are things you can do to prevent these chronic diseases. Preventative care is a great way to be proactive about your health! Eating healthy, exercising regularly, and getting vaccinated or screened regularly are just a few examples of preventative care.

As part of AAHI's cultural media campaign, we partnered with several local Asian newspapers to publish in-language articles which promote the importance of staying healthy through preventative care. Please click on the images below to read a full-sized version of the published articles! Thank you to our wonderful media partners for their commitment in helping us build a healthier community.

Recap: ACA Connect Session & Mental Health 101 Health Promoter Training

AAHI had a busy, yet productive day on January 22nd!

In the morning and afternoon, AAHI worked with five dedicated volunteers from the Viet Nam Medical Assistance Program (VNMAP) to provide Asian-language Affordable Care Act (ACA) information to local small businesses. During this session, we targeted businesses located in Silver Spring and Wheaton. Small business owners and employees often have limited time away from work to learn about health and seek primary care. Through this outreach opportunity, we were able to bring information directly to the small businesses! By the end of the afternoon, we distributed over 95 ACA brochures and reached out to over 29 small businesses.

Thank you to our wonderful VNMAP volunteers and staff for making this opportunity possible!

Later on that night, AAHI's Health Promoter team came together to learn more about mental health. Eugene Morris, Manager of the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services Access to Behavioral Health, provided a basic overview of mental health, signs and symptoms of common mental illnesses, and Montgomery County support services. Afterwards, the Health Promoters had the chance to apply what they learned to a case scenario.

Many thanks to our fantastic speaker and Health Promoters for a great training!
