AICS & AAHI Health Fair

The Asian Indians for Community Service, Inc. (AICS) and AAHI will be hosting a health fair this Sunday! There will be a variety of free health care services available, including but not limited to: cancer screenings, hepatitis B screenings, pneumonia vaccines, health care professional presentations, dental check, and mental health resources.

AAHI is also excited to announce that we will be launching our recently created behavioral health projects from 10:00 am - 11:00 am!

Recap: Last Week's Outreach Events

AAHI attended some great outreach events this past week!

On April 15th, we attended the Montgomery College Health Fair in Rockville. This event offered a variety of health resources and services to the students and staff. AAHI provided a number of carbon monoxide screenings as well as general health information. The Wheel of Health Education was also a big hit at our Resource Information Table!

AAHI was able to go to two outreach events on April 19th! In the morning, we attended the Cambodian New Year Celebration in Silver Spring, hosted by the Cambodian Buddhist Society. There were several cultural activities as part of the celebration. Our Health Promoters provided outreach and education on several health topics, including breast cancer, hepatitis B, osteoporosis, local resources, diabetes, and patient-physician communication.

Later that afternoon, AAHI joined the Muslim Community Center (MCC) for their First Inter-Faith Health Fair in Silver Spring. Despite the windy weather, it was a heavily attended event and we were able to bring health information to over 100 people!

Welcome to AAHI, Huyen!


We would like to welcome Huyen Bui as the new Resource Coordinator of AAHI! Her main responsibilities include assisting residents by informing them of and connecting them with existing health and social services available within the County. She is also responsible for planning, coordinating, and evaluating small business outreach in the community.

Huyen is passionate about all aspects of public health and especially enjoys interacting with the community through outreach efforts. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Health Administration and Policy with a focus on Public Health from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Fun fact: On the weekends, Huyen enjoys exploring D.C. and going to music shows.

Recap: Wat Thai Songkran New Year Festival

On Sunday, April 12th, AAHI joined the Wat Thai Buddhist Temple for their Songkran New Year Festival in Silver Spring. The Songkran Festival is known as the traditional New Year Day in Thailand. Community members had the opportunity to participate in different social activities, visit food stalls, and watch cultural performances.


At AAHI's Resource Information Table, we provided information on cancer, hepatitis B, osteoporosis, local resources, diabetes, and patient-physician communication.

Registration: Screenings will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis so early arrival is recommended.

Holy Cross Hospital will host its 11th annual free health fair and screening two-day event! Learn about health topics for the entire family. April 18th will involve health screenings for diabetes glucose and cholesterol (must fast at least 6 hours before). April 25th will have clinical breast examinations and Pap tests for women (age 21+).

Free Medical Health Fair

The American Diversity Group and Rainbow Gardens Adult Day Care will host a free health fair where you can receive medical advice, information, and care. Services include ear, nose, throat (ENT) check-ups; glaucoma eye exams; dental hygiene education; and physical therapy and massage. There will also be introductions to medical care specialists in a variety of health fields such as neurology and physical therapy.

Recap: Last Week's Outreach Events

On March 28th, AAHI joined the Chinese American Senior Services Association (CASSA) for their 18th Health Check-Up. This is an event that CASSA hosts twice a year at the MobileMed/CASSA clinic in Germantown, offering a variety of services to community members. AAHI provided general health information as well as bone density screenings at our Resource Information Table.

The next day, the Viet Nam Medical Assistance Program (VNMAP), with support from AAHI, held their Screening, Management, Awareness, and Solutions for Hepatitis B (SMASH-B) Education & Screening Day. This program aims to provide free hepatitis B education, screening, vaccination, and treatment referrals for the community in Montgomery County. During this event, community members had the opportunity to attend an educational lecture on hepatitis B. Afterwards, they were able to receive a free hepatitis B screening.

While community members waited to get screened, they could visit different exhibitor booths. At AAHI's Resource Information Table, we provided information on breast cancer, hepatitis B, osteoporosis, local resources, diabetes, and patient-physician communication.

On April 2nd, AAHI participated in Watkins Mill High School's Annual Health Fair. The health fair promoted different aspects of health and wellness for students and families. AAHI provided general health information and carbon monoxide screenings. Students who stopped by our Resource Information Table had the chance to spin our Wheel of Health Education to learn more about local resources.

Oral, Head, & Neck Cancer Screening

Oral, head, and neck cancers are the sixth most common form of cancer in the US, with 40,000 cases diagnosed annually. Johns Hopkins Head & Neck Cancer Center physicians are providing free head and neck cancer screenings. The 10-minute screenings are easy and painless. These screenings are not available for patients who had an oral, head, and neck exam in the past year.

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services' Asian American Health Initiative, in partnership with the African American Health Program and Latino Health Initiative, would like to invite you to participate in a free training workshop as part of the Empowering Community Health Organizations (E.C.H.O.) Project 2015.
