Job Opportunities at AAHI!

Join the Asian American Health Initiative team! We are currently seeking to fill our Program Coordinator - Health Education & Communications and Senior Program Coordinator positions. Ideal candidates should be highly motivated, hard working, and passionate about serving the community!

The Program Coordinator - Health Education & Communications will be responsible for coordinating communications and health education initiatives targeting the Asian American community in Montgomery County. Additionally the individual will support with research, social media, reporting, and health education program planning and implementation.

The Senior Program Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating and implementing all community outreach efforts and the management of AAHI's Health Promoters Program, our team of community health advocates. In line with this, the individual will prepare reports, recruit and train volunteers, liaise with the community on behalf of AAHI, and evaluate program effectiveness.

If you, your family members, or your community members need health insurance coverage, you still have time! Open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) ends on January 31, 2016. To enroll in a qualified health plan, visit www.marylandhealthconnection.gov. Online enrollment is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you need access to the internet, visit your local Montgomery County library where free, high-speed, secure Wi-Fi is provided.

Recap: Recent Outreach Events!

Last Sunday, November 8th, AAHI attended two outreach events in the community!

In the morning, we joined the Migrant Heritage Commission (MHC) for their 9th Annual Health Fair in Silver Spring. The event was hosted in partnership with the Filipino American Ministry of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in a variety of health screenings. AAHI provided general health information as well as bone density screenings at our Resource Information Table.

Afterwards, AAHI attended the Chinese Christian Church's (CCC) Community Health Fair in Silver Spring. Their health fair offered a variety of health information and services, such as vision and glaucoma screening, blood pressure, physical therapy, and massage. AAHI continued providing bone density screenings and health information on topics like cancer, hepatitis B, mental health, and the Affordable Care Act.

Recap: ECHO Workshop #10 - Finding Census Data

On November 2nd, AAHI, in partnership with the African American Health Program and the Latino Health Initiative, hosted our tenth Empowering Community Health Organizations (ECHO) Workshop! This workshop focused on the topic of "Finding Census Data." Our ECHO Project provides practical and professional training workshops designed to build the capacity and sustainability of community organizations.



The workshop was the second in our three-part series on health data. It was led by a Data Dissemination Specialist at the United States Census Bureau. She provided an overview of how to find national, state, and local data using Census tools. Attendees participated in an interactive demonstration on how to navigate American FactFinder.



Over 35 attendees, representing about 20 organizations, came to our workshop. Thank you to our awesome speaker, Steering Committee, Health Promoters, volunteers, and staff for making this a successful night! We hope to see you at the final part of this health data series in spring 2016.

Open enrollment season begins November 1, 2015 through January 31, 2016

Under the Affordable Care Act, adults 18 to 64 years of age are required to have health coverage. Otherwise, you may need to pay a tax penalty. Through the Maryland Health Connection, you can choose from a variety of health plans to fit your needs. 

Enrollment is simple and available 24/7 online at www.marylandhealthconnection.gov. You can also call 1-855-642-8572 (toll free) or 1-855-642-8573 (TTY). Check out the flyer below for locations that provide in-person assistance in Montgomery County and Prince George's County.

Recap: Recent Outreach Events!

On October 5th, our Resource Coordinator and intern went to the 16th School Community United in Partnership (SCUP) Conference in Rockville. Counselors and administrators from Montgomery County Public Schools came together to learn more about resources for students and families in the school system. This conference served as an opportunity for AAHI to share our multilingual health education resources on a variety of topics. We had some great conversations with key school personnel about our mental health photonovels!

Later on in the week, we joined the Guru Gobind Singh Foundation (GGSF) for their 5th Annual Health Fair in Rockville. The event provided free health advice and counseling from leading physicians on cancer, diabetes, heart disease, in addition to many other health topics. Screening services were also available. The first 250 attendees had the opportunity to receive free blood tests and flu vaccinations.

AAHI provided bone density screenings, as well as general health education, to a number of community members.

Lung Cancer Screening & Education

Adventist HealthCare is offering low-dose CT lung cancer screenings for high-risk Asian community members! Eligible candidates include men and women ages 55-74, individuals with a significant smoking history, and individuals who have had significant exposure to secondhand smoke and/or previous asbestos exposure. 

Participants will also receive free tobacco cessation counseling, nicotine replacement therapy, and a referral to a physician for follow-up screening and care.
