SMASH-B 2014 Education & Screening Day

On January 12, the Viet Nam Medical Assistance Program (VNMAP), with support from AAHI, held a hepatitis B Education & Screening Day as the first of four events for their Screening, Management, Awareness, and Solutions for Hepatitis B (SMASH-B) 2014 program. Participants first attended a health education lecture conducted by a bilingual Vietnamese American physician, about the basics of hepatitis B and the importance of getting screened. Following the lecture, over 50 participants were able to receive free hepatitis B screenings. They will return on Sunday, February 16 to receive their results and if necessary, the first out of three vaccinations.

Participants had the opportunity to visit exhibitor booths from AAHI, the African American Health Program, Holy Cross Hospital, and the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services while they waited to get screened. Financial services, yoga meditation, and an Affordable Care Act Assister were also available to participants. AAHI provided information about breast cancer, hepatitis B, osteoporosis, diabetes, and patient-physician communication. In addition, we used the Wheel of Health Education to inform community members about local resources.

A community member stated she was very grateful for the service provided to the Vietnamese community and referred her friend to the program. As someone who speaks limited English, she appreciated that bilingual Vietnamese volunteers were available to her throughout the event. Overall, the SMASH-B Education & Screening Day was a success. AAHI would like to thank our partners at VNMAP, volunteers, Health Promoters, and staff for making this a great and valuable event!
